Smart storage in your kitchen design will let you utilize every inch in the room and provide a convenient place for all of your cooking items. When considering kitchen storage options, look for these features to create an efficient space you’ll enjoy using.

A Kitchen Design Guide for Storage

1. The Pantry

A large pantry can be used to store more than food items—it’s also a convenient location for rarely used appliances like slow cookers or mixers that take up countertop space.

Include short and tall shelving. Short spaces can be used for canned goods, while taller spaces can be reserved for larger jars, boxes, and appliances.

Think about what you use most often and where you’d like it to be in the pantry. For example, you may want a low cereal shelf so children can reach it while storing what you use frequently at your own eye level.

2. Drawers & Cabinets

Deeper drawers are useful for miscellaneous items like dishrags and measuring cups. A pull-out cabinet will accommodate pots and pans near the stove. It’s also convenient to have trash and recycling bins in a pull-out cabinet near the sink.

3. Hanging Storage

If you’re tight on square footage, you can free up a lot of space by hanging up items. Replace your knife block with a magnetic rack. Show off your cutting board collection on a gallery wall. Hang pots and pans over the island or against a wall with S-hooks or a pot rack.
