Between commuting, working, and regular home cleaning, the average American leads a busy life. Unfortunately, this hectic schedule leaves little time for recreational activities, passion projects, and quality time with family. For a breakdown into how many Americans spend their time, here’s a helpful guide.

Commute Time & Working Hours

While working takes up the better part of the average American’s week, there’s also the additional commute time to take into account. On average, people travel 26.1 minutes one way just to get to work. While it may not seem like a lot, that equates to 4.35 hours in a five-day workweek. In terms of labor, according to a 2018 survey, full-time employees spend an average of 8.5 hours working per day. For many with longer commutes or a more intense jobs, additional hours can add up quickly.

Sleeping

Given the hectic nature of an average schedule, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. While sleep is critical for brain functioning and overall health, it doesn’t leave much time for leisure activities.

Home Cleaning

After a long workday, there’s often more work to be done in the home. For example, after cooking, the kitchen usually needs some tidying. Meanwhile, there is always some dusting, sweeping, or laundry to do. Less frequently, curtains and upholstery need to be cared for or bathtubs scrubbed. Although both men and women are involved in home upkeep, women spend almost an additional hour per day on home cleaning, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, cutting significant time from their day.
