Many people believe that their properties are protected if the doors are locked, but as any locksmith can tell you, this is unfortunately not always the case. There are ways to pick a lock, whether it’s your front door or your filing cabinet. If you suspect your lock has been compromised, there are several signs to look for so that you can stay protected. Below are three of the most common signs of a compromised lock to ensure your safety.

3 Signs Your Lock Has Been Compromised

1. Signs of Forced Entry

This is the most common tampering you will see with break-ins. Signs that someone has tried to force their way in with brute force can be bent deadbolts or latches, doorframes that have been pushed out of place, or warped or scraping on the paint from the lock being twisted around and then retightened in place. If the thief has tried to bash the lock or drill through the deadbolt, there is often splintering of wood or twisted metal.

2. Signs of Bumping

locksmithBumping is a popular method with locksmiths, but in the last few years, the method has been popularized online. Thieves may attempt it as well. To “bump” a lock, the locksmith will take a key and file down the teeth into little sharp points. They then insert the key into the lock, pull it out a little, and then hit the end of the key with a heavy object until they feel the points catch all the lock tumblers. Then they simply turn the key and unlock the lock. It can be hard to see signs of this method, but nicks around the keyhole, or scratching that looks like the lock was hit are clues your lock may have been bumped.

3. Signs of Picking

Using small lockpicking tools, a thief will maneuver the lock tumblers manually. Picking a lock with tools is a skill, and takes much more finesse than simply trying to force the lock. There is also generally very little damage to the lock’s operation. Consequently, it can also be hard to spot the evidence. Shiny, small scratches around the keyhole are sometimes the only signs that a break-in has occurred.

If you suspect your lock has been picked, contact a locksmith as soon as possible to get your locks changed. This will provide you with peace of mind and protect your home from intrusion.
