If you’re using the same light bulb in every room of your home, you’re not maximizing your lighting options. There are many factors to consider; color, brightness, and the location of the light fixtures are all important aspects. Follow the guide below to place the right bulb type in each of your home’s rooms.

A Home Lighting Guide for Choosing Bulbs

1. Bedrooms

When you set up the lighting in your bedroom, include task lighting next to the bed (lamps for the bedside tables) and angle the overhead bulbs away from the bed. If there’s a dressing area, angle the light toward it. The bedrooms need a cozy and soft feeling that you can get with a soft white or yellow bulb. Look for one that is rated between 2,700 and 3,000 Kelvin; bedrooms should have between 2,000 and 4,000 lumens.

2. Kitchens & Bathrooms

lightingIn addition to the ambient lighting, kitchens and bathrooms should have task lighting. Place these over the countertops and island in the kitchen or the vanity in the bathroom. For ambient lighting, look for a yellowish-white color; this is labeled as warm white, or between 3,000 and 4,000 Kelvin. Kitchens should have between 5,000 and 10,000 total lumens, while bathrooms should have between 4,000 and 8,000.

3. Living Rooms & Dens

Living rooms and dens have similar requirements for coloring as bedrooms because you want a cozy feel. Look for a soft white bulb between 2,700 and 3,000 Kelvin. Add accent lighting in one corner of the room to draw the eye to the focal point, such as a fireplace or a piece of artwork. Living rooms should have between 1,500 to 3,000 lumens.

4. Working Spaces

Working spaces need the brightest and whitest light since you want to see with maximized contrast and stay alert. Look for a bright white bulb between 4,000 and 5,00 Kelvin. These rooms should have between 3,000 to 6,000 lumens.
