If you own or manage a commercial property, then you know that safety is a top priority. In addition to installing surveillance cameras and having a fire evacuation plan, it’s important that you include guardrails or ornamental handrails on any steps, landings, platforms, and rooftop areas. Below, learn more about the rules and regulations of this important building feature.

4 Safety Regulations for Guardrails & Ornamental Handrails

1. Capacity

According to the International Building Code, guardrails and ornamental handrails must be able to support at least 50 pounds per linear foot. They must also have the ability to support up to 200 pounds of concentrated force in any direction and from any location. This will ensure that the guardrail provides a strong enough barrier to prevent falls and accidents.

2. Height

ornamental handrails Guardrails and ornamental handrails must sit at least 42 inches above the ground level of any step, landing, platform, or rooftop area. Improper installation may result in building code violations and financial penalties, not to mention the possibility of injury and death.

3. Openings

The openings between balusters or ornamental patterns on guardrails or handrails should not allow the passage of a four-inch sphere between the ground level and 34 inches high. From 34 to 42 inches high, the openings between balusters or ornamental patterns should not allow the passage of an eight-inch sphere.

4. Roof Hatches & Equipment

Guardrails or ornamental handrails are required for roof hatches and equipment located within 10 feet of the edge. They must have balusters or ornamental patterns with openings that do not allow the passage of a 21-inch sphere.
