Hauling a utility trailer or another kind of pull-behind option adds thousands of pounds of weight to your vehicle; this affects your vehicle’s pulling power and stopping ability. A brake controller is an essential piece of safety equipment that counters these issues and helps you avoid accidents.

Choosing a Brake Controller

Proportional

A proportional brake controller uses a motion sensor to predict the amount of pressure needed by the trailer brakes to stop. The pressure that the driver applies indicates to the proportional controller how much power to use to help the trailer slow down. The feel of braking is smooth and, because the systems work together, there is little wear on either.

Time-Delay

utility-trailerThis type of controller works via a preset system set by the driver, which is dependent on how much weight is being towed. The intensity and application rate do not change once set, although they can be adjusted manually by a sync switch. When the driver brakes, there is a time delay between the braking of the tow vehicle and the trailer. These systems deliver a less smooth ride but are easier to install and less expensive than proportional controllers.

Installing a Brake Controller

Most systems have a monitor that can be installed under or on the dashboard. A 4-wire configuration is standard and hooks into the braking system of the towing vehicle. Each wire has a function:

  • supply brake power to the trailer
  • an electrical ground for the controller
  • brake switch, which transfers power once the driver brakes
  • battery connection to supply power to the controller

The dealer where you purchase your utility trailer or RV from can set up the controller if you don’t feel confident doing it yourself.

A brake controller should be a standard purchase with all trailers. For all your hauling needs, see Smith Trailers and Equipment, Inc. in West Chester, OH.
