Funeral flowers are a popular way to express condolences and show your respect for the family of a lost loved one. It can be overwhelming to decide which flowers you would like to send during this difficult time. However, like many aspects of funerals, there are certain traditions and customs to follow. To ensure you don’t cause offense and respond accordingly, consult the following guide to choose a beautiful and fitting arrangement.

Faith & Belief Systems

Buddhist funerals often display simple red flowers and smaller blooms. White flowers, like orchids or lilies, are preferred in the Greek and Eastern Orthodox religions. The Muslim religion has varying preferences but sometimes will display palm branches at the ceremony. Jewish funerals usually do not feature flowers at all. The families are usually brought fruit baskets and baked goods during shiva calls. When in doubt, ask the family or a religious leader in your community to see what is an appropriate floral arrangement.

Immediate & Extended Family

Certain flowers are reserved for spouses, children, parents, and grandparents. These are often displayed at the viewing or wake and could be placed inside or on the casket. Wreaths and sprays are the most common, and parents may provide table arrangements.

White sprays are the most popular choice for extended family, as well as informal funeral flowers since they’re easy to travel with. It can also be acceptable to send a bouquet to the family’s home.

Friends & Coworkers

Flowers from friends and coworkers are a great sign of support. It’s appropriate to send them to the funeral home or their office. You can choose a selection of simple and soft-colored blooms, like roses, lilies, or orchids. If they’re intended to be taken home, it’s wise to include a vase. To be safe, go on the smaller side so that the family does not become overwhelmed with a lack of space.
