Dental crowns will restore your smile and comfort. While they’re durable, they generally require replacement over time. The following are some of the main signs that it’s time to talk to your dentist about replacing yours.

Is It Time to Replace Your Dental Crown?

1. Pain or Swelling

Since a crown protects your natural tooth underneath, pain in the area could indicate an issue. A crack or hole in the crown will result in tooth sensitivity. Bacteria can also grow on the exposed tooth structure and cause decay. If you experience any pain, see your dentist as soon as possible. They will determine whether they can repair the crown or if they need to replace it.

2. Changes in Your Bite

This change could indicate that the crown has shifted out of place or worn down, which is common in patients who grind their teeth. The crown may just need an adjustment, or your dentist might need to replace it to restore your bite.

3. An Old Crown

Dental crowns last between five and 15 years on average, depending on your oral hygiene habits and how much wear they sustain. Too much wear and tear can cause crown damage and expose your natural tooth to bacteria. If you’ve had your crown for closer to 15 years, your dentist might recommend replacement as a preventative measure. Always attend your routine cleanings so your dentist can inspect the condition of your crowns.
