Your vehicle’s engine is a complex system of components designed to get you safely around town. The proper motor oil is used to help keep this automotive muscle from overheating and breaking down. Over time, the oil gets dirty and loses its ability to keep the engine lubricated. Getting an oil change is essential, but the key is using the right kind based on your vehicle’s needs. Here is a quick guide on the different types of engine oil.

4 Types of Engine Oil

1. Synthetic

Synthetic oil is more heat-resistant, provides better lubrication, and removes larger amounts of impurities from the engine than most other engine oils. It has smaller molecules, which helps create more support to accommodate advanced engines. However, synthetic oil is often more costly than other oils as well. While some vehicles require synthetic oil, your owner’s manual will provide a definitive answer on whether you need it or not.

2. Conventional

oil changeMade from a combination of petroleum and refined crude oil, conventional oil is typically used in vehicles with low miles and standard engines. Depending on the brand, this type may be more affected by temperature changes, compared to the synthetic version. Over time, conventional oil can create thick sludge due to contaminants and carbons, which can impact the functionality of your engine. Ask your mechanic to check for sludge during your oil change and follow their directions to remove it.

3. High-Mileage

Used vehicles with higher mileage, typically over 75,000 miles, may need a specific oil to protect older engines from wear, sludge, and severe weather changes. High-mileage oil — which has many of the properties of synthetic oil —may also have additional detergents and additives to help prevent engine seals and rings from breaking. These extra materials can also help to remove sludge and minimize oil oxidation.

4. Synthetic Blend

If your owner’s manual calls for a synthetic blend, you should mention this to the mechanic at your next oil change. This mix of conventional and synthetic oils is designed to provide quality lubrication to enhance your vehicle’s performance and long-term usage. Some pick-up trucks and SUVs generally benefit from this type of oil because it helps protect engines from overheating while hauling heavy loads.
