Last year’s flu season was particularly bad, with an estimated 900,000 people hospitalized to get treatment for complications. These numbers highlight the importance of getting a yearly flu vaccination, which is recommended for people of all ages and health statuses.

Why Should I Get a Flu Vaccination This Year?

1. Decreased Risk of Being Hospitalized

Studies show that receiving a flu vaccine reduces the chance of hospitalization by about 60% in healthy people. Symptoms of seasonal flu include fever, sore throat, nausea, and vomiting. While early symptoms may be mild, some people experience more serious issues, such as dehydration.

2. Lower Risk of Serious Illness

vaccinationVaccines work differently on everyone, so it’s possible to be vaccinated and still acquire a strain of the flu. Of those vaccinated who do become ill, the risk of developing severe illness is much lower when compared to unvaccinated people. People who were vaccinated had a 59% lower risk of being admitted to the intensive care unit than those with the flu who did not receive the vaccination.

3. Reduced Heart Attack Risk

The flu usually has a more serious effect on people with heart disease. Along with an increased risk of developing pneumonia, people with heart disease are also at a greater risk of having a heart attack if they forgo the annual vaccine. It’s best to get vaccinated as early in the flu season as possible to prevent complications.

4. Greater Protection for Pregnant Women

It’s recommended that all pregnant women are vaccinated during flu season. Doing so preserves the health of the mother while also lowering the risk of birth defects for the baby. If you plan on breastfeeding, your baby will also be protected after he or she is born thanks to antibodies passed along via breast milk.
