It’s easy to overlook electrical outlets as long as they’re functioning. Just because your home’s outlets are powering your electronics, though, doesn't mean they’re in good working order. Generally speaking, it’s wise to replace outlets every 15 to 25 years, but you may need to call an electrical contractor sooner if you notice any of the following signs.

3 Signs Your Electrical Outlets Need Replacing

1. They Have Just Two Prongs

Outlets with two prongs instead of three pose the risk of power surges and electrocution because their wiring isn't grounded. In fact, since 1962, electrical code in the United States has required all outlets to be three-pronged, grounded ones. That means if the outlets in your home are missing a prong, they’re long overdue for replacement. Upgrading to three-pronged models will increase the safety of the entire electrical system considerably.

2. They Are Prone to Melting

3. They Feel Loose

If your plugs are constantly falling out of their sockets, call an electrical contractor sooner rather than later. As the inner components of the outlet wear down, plugs can start feeling loose. This, in turn, poses the risk of electrical arcing and sparking.
