Granite countertops are incredibly popular in both kitchens and bathrooms because of their durability and luxurious look. However, when including them in your home improvement project, it’s wise to consider the maintenance requirements. Because granite is a natural stone, it’s vulnerable to staining and damage if it’s not maintained. To keep this material in good shape, here’s what you need to know.

3 Tips for Maintaining Granite Countertops

1. Clean up Spills

Cleaning spills as soon as they happen will prevent the stone from staining. Gently blot the liquid with a paper towel or soft cloth right away, and then apply a granite-safe cleaner if there’s any residue. Avoid wiping the liquid, as this will only spread the spill, increasing the area that’s vulnerable to staining. Also, don’t use cleaners that contain ammonia, lemon, or vinegar, as they’re acidic and will wear down the surface.

2. Use Pot-Holders

countertopsUnlike soapstone, granite is not heat-resistant. In fact, it can crack following an extreme temperature fluctuation. As such, you shouldn’t put hot dishware directly on the countertop. Instead, use pot-holders, which can adequately absorb the heat.

3. Seal Them Periodically

Granite must be sealed periodically to protect it from staining. Sealing it every six months or so will also prevent germs from settling into hairline cracks and pores, so you can have peace of mind knowing your kitchen is always clean. Use a penetrating sealer that’s formulated specifically for application on natural stone.
