Chronically dry skin is not only uncomfortable but also often a source of self-consciousness. Dealing with it can be frustrating as well when the skin care products that work for your friends don’t seem to do anything for you. Fortunately, you can take a few simple steps to combat your dry skin.

How to Take Care of Dry Skin

1. Moisturize Immediately After a Shower or Bath

After bathing, apply moisturizer to seal in the water on your skin; otherwise, it will evaporate. Always use oil-based moisturizers for dry skin. These skin care products are richer and longer-lasting than basic lotions.

When you have dry skin, it’s best to use warm water at all times. Hot water removes more natural oils, which leaves your skin feeling dry. If it’s too hot to the touch initially, it’s too hot for your skin.

3. Use Oil-Based Skin Care Products

Aside from moisturizers, you should also use oil-based cleansers. Many soaps are detergent-based, which is designed to break down oil molecules and make them easier to rinse away. While this can be beneficial for dishes or clothes, it’s not conducive for your skin. Instead, look into cleansing oils, especially for the face.

4. Be Gentle With Exfoliants

Exfoliating is recommended for removing dead cells, but if your skin is dry, you could do more harm than good. If your skin is red and cracked, forgo exfoliating for the day. When your skin is healthier, use chemical exfoliants instead of mechanical ones; instead of a loofah, opt for a soft washcloth with a glycolic or lactic acid-based product.

5. Use Cold Compresses for Itchiness

If you ever get itchy, resist the urge to scratch. Since dry skin is prone to peeling, scratching will only make it more painful and unsightly. Instead, use a cold compress and lay it on top to numb the itchiness. In a pinch, you can use some ice cubes in a plastic bag or wrap a small pack of frozen vegetables in a clean towel.
