For some people, an MRI can feel tight and lead to anxiety. This is particularly true for patients with claustrophobia. To reduce any chance of complications during your scan, here are a few ways to manage anxiety before and during your appointment.

3 Tips for Getting Through an MRI If You’re Claustrophobic

1. Use an Open MRI Machine

MRI machines are often portrayed as closed tubes that provide little space. However, there are other options for people with claustrophobia. For example, high-field open machines don’t have a compressed, tube-like setup. Upright machines provide the same open feeling and can give the patient a sense of control, as the procedure is doing in the standing position.

2. Practice Meditation

MRIMeditation techniques can clear your mind and help you relax in stressful situations. They will help distract you by turning your focus inward, toward your breathing.

Also, meditation can be used to create positive associations with the MRI machine. Visualize energy or light from the machine providing a calming feeling. Practice this technique before your appointment so you can use it during the scan.

3. Opt for Medication

Another option for managing stress or anxiety leading up to your scan is to discuss medication with your doctor. A light relaxant or sedative may help you relieve stress and feel less confined and tense during the procedure. Your medical team can help you find a medication for managing your stress, so be open and honest about your anxiety.
