Writing an obituary for a loved one who has passed away can be a difficult task. However, if you follow a general outline, the process can be eased. If you find yourself struggling to find the right words and platform, the funeral home may be able to assist you with producing the obituary as well. If you are unsure what to include in your beloved’s obituary, consult the guide below.

1. Age & Date of Passing

At the beginning of the obituary, you will want to make an announcement of the death. Include the deceased's full name, age, and date of passing. You can also include their date of birth and their last place of residence. You can include the cause of death, but only if the family is comfortable sharing this information with the public.

2. Accomplishments & Passions

The bulk of the obituary should talk about the person's life. It shouldn't be a full biography, but rather a positive summary. Start by writing where they were born and their parents' names. Next, state their spouse's name, as well as the date and place of the marriage. List their accomplishments, jobs, military service, and other accolades. It is also important to talk about their passions and hobbies. Give the reader a vivid description of who the person you loved was.

3. Surviving Family Members

In this section, include the names of immediate family members, as well as other close relatives who are currently living. This can include children, grandchildren, siblings, and spouses. You can also include a list of close family members who preceded your loved one in death.

4. Details About the Funeral Services

Funeral homeIn the next part of the obituary, provide the details of the funeral service, what date and time it will be held, and the name and location of the funeral home. You can also list details about the burial services, and if there will be a wake or other memorial service.

5. Additional Closing Thoughts & Photos

If the family would appreciate donations to a charity in lieu of flowers or would like to thank the hospice, the caregivers, or even the funeral home, this is the spot to do so. You can also include a religious passage, a poem, or other closing thoughts. Finally, include photos of your loved one. Though a large photo of the deceased is usually at the top of the obituary, a few more candid photos at the end are a nice way to display your loved one’s energy and happiness during their life.
