Custom cabinets add style, storage, and value to kitchens. If you’re interested in new kitchen cabinets, communicate your needs and aspirations with your contractor. Here’s a list of helpful questions to ask a cabinetmaker to ensure they meet your cabinetry requirements.

4 Questions to Ask a Custom Cabinet Contractor

What materials will you use?

When you invest in custom cabinets, they should be durable and long-lasting. Ask your contractor how they construct their cabinets. Ideally, the box should be constructed of plywood with faces made of solid hardwood.

Which finishes are best?

cabinetsCustom cabinets are finished with lacquer or varnish. Varnish tends to be the more durable and chemically resistant finish. In addition, if your design specifies glass doors, ask your contractor if interiors will be stained to match exteriors.

Can I view the design plans?

You should know all the details of any custom cabinetry design. Ask your contractor to review the plans with you. Have them double-check the dimensions, materials, finishes, hardware, and accessories and comment on any concerns. In addition, ask to view a model or a display version of each cabinet type.

Do you offer a warranty?

Inquire if your custom cabinets are warrantied. Discuss if your contractor is willing to cover the cost of postinstallation repairs and replacement parts and for how long any warranty lasts.
