Many industries rely on the welding process to produce high-quality products. Its effects can be seen on everything from your car and home to your furniture and cooking equipment. However, not all welding processes are alike, and one technique might better serve your project than another. Here are a few of the more popular welding forms and their purposes.

What Are Some Popular Welding Types?

1. Metal Inert Gas

MIG welding is one of the fastest and cleanest welding forms available. It uses heat created by an electric current to create an arc between a wire electrode and the weld pool. The wire is fed at high speed so that it melts and forms part of the weld pool. As the electrode melts, it forms an inert gas that protects the arc and the weld pool. Due to its fast-paced nature, MIG welding is frequently used in high-production facilities. However, to maintain a clean appearance, it must be used in clean and windless environments.

2. Shielded Metal Arc

weldingAlso known as stick welding, this is a manual process that uses an electric current to create an arc between the flux-covered electrode and the metals to be welded. As the electrode is fed into the weld pool, it breaks down into gases that shield the pool. This particular welding technique can be used for a wide variety of purposes; however, it’s most commonly used for constructing steel structures and welding iron to steel.

3. Gas Tungsten Arc

More commonly known as tungsten inert gas—or TIG—welding, this form is one of the more difficult types to master. Instead of an automatic wire, it requires the welder to feed a non-consumable tungsten electrode into the weld pool. Like the other two techniques, this produces an inert gas, which cools and protects the tungsten and weld puddle. As this is a more precise technique, it creates higher-quality welds and is usable on a wider range of metals—including thin metals like aluminum sheets.
