The internet cutting out is never pleasant. Fortunately, with the right information, troubleshooting your router could easily get the net back up and running. Here are a few quick fixes to solve your issue so you don’t need to call your internet provider.

4 Router Fixes When the Internet Goes Out

1. Ensure Everything Is Plugged In

Check the router plug and all the related cables first. A cable can easily get kicked or otherwise moved, preventing a secure connection that keeps your internet working. If everything is plugged in correctly, inspect the router temperature. An overheated router will be unstable and can sustain lasting damage. If the device is extremely hot, adjust its position for better air circulation. If this doesn’t help, replace it.

2. Unplug the System

internetUnplug the router’s main power cable and wait a few seconds. If your modem is separate from your router, unplug it as well. After 30 to 60 seconds, put the devices back in. Restarting the system is often enough to get the internet running again. However, if you reboot your system on a frequent basis, the firmware is likely damaged and will need professional attention.

3. Change the Router’s Position

Move your router, as large, dense objects can jam the connection. Metal objects, such as microwaves, are common issues, especially when they are older. Routers on the 2.5GHz frequency are also vulnerable to microwave interference. In addition to moving your router, make sure the antenna is pointing upward to avoid further signal problems.

4. Hit Reset

Find the reset button on your router as a last resort. Use a paperclip or toothpick to hold this button down for about 30 seconds so the router reverts to factory settings. Keep in mind you will have to set up your account and password again; however, it will improve internet efficiency, assuming there isn’t a firmware issue.
