Vintage posters are more than just artwork for your wall. Many vintage pieces are collectible, and some could be worth considerably more than you paid for them if properly maintained and cared for. Given their inherently fragile nature, preventive measures are one of the most important aspects of their care. Here’s what you need to know to keep your posters safe.

Taking Care of Your Vintage Posters

Framing

If you want to keep your posters in good condition but still want to display them, framing is your best option. Be sure to use an archival matting behind your poster. Regular matting materials may contain acids, which will gradually eat away at your poster. If you decide to forgo matting, you’ll need to purchase a plastic spacer to prevent the poster from touching the glass. An increase in humidity can cause the poster to cling to the glass and adhere, ultimately damaging the poster if spacers or matting are not used.

Vintage PosterAnother factor to consider is lighting. Vintage posters are susceptible to damage from bright lights and sunshine, so hang your framed poster away from windows where sunlight can shine on them. Keep them away from lamps or lighting fixtures as well. As you choose your frame for your poster, opt for one that has a UV protectant glazing on the glass.

Storing

If you’d rather store your poster, there are two options. You can store them flat, in an acid-free sleeve, or you can roll them up and store them in acid-free tubes. Sleeves and tubes help to protect your posters from dust, dirt, or from being bent or torn.

Restoration

If your poster becomes damaged, there are some things to consider before taking it in for restoration. If the damage is minor (for instance, if the edges are worn), you may not need to address it. Some collectors and potential buyers consider this to give the posters character and authenticity. However, if your vintage poster has suffered more than basic wear and tear, consider talking to a professional restorer. Given that restorers often charge by the hour, this can add up quickly. Weigh the cost of repair to the value of the poster as you make your decision.
