Hardwood flooring has many benefits, not the least of which is its durability. However, as strong as it is, it may require additional attention in the fall and winter to make sure it remains in good condition. The following guide outlines preventative measures to take as the weather cools.

3 Ways Hardwood Flooring is Affected by Cold Weather

1. Dries It Out

Winter usually removes humidity from the air, causing your hardwood flooring to be deprived of moisture. Normally, the natural flexibility of wood causes it to remain resilient and sturdy. However, the lower the temperature gets, the more difficult it will be for the wood to acclimate. As a result, it will crack, especially near heating vents. Poor quality wood may also splinter. Therefore, besides investing in quality materials during flooring installation, consider getting a humidifier to keep the wood supple.

2. Causes Contraction

To adapt to the changing temperatures, your hardwood flooring may shrink. Some of the boards and tiles may even separate from each other. They will likely not close until the weather warms up, allowing the wood to absorb moisture and expand to its regular size. Until then, you may need to watch your step or try covering the gaps with thick mats or rugs.

3. Exposes It to Long-Term Damage

However, when the boards crack and shrink, they are especially vulnerable to accumulating soil and other tiny particles that could scratch them or hinder them from closing properly. In turn, this could make the wood vulnerable to water damage that would cause it to swell and crack further. At some point, the floors would become both unsightly and difficult to walk on. To prevent this, make sure there are mats to wipe your feet near every entry door and vacuum and sweep regularly.
