Chainsaws are useful for everything from pruning limbs to cutting down trees. If you use this tool frequently, maintaining it properly will ensure it functions for years to come. Follow these simple maintenance tips to keep your chainsaw running smoothly.

3 Steps for Chainsaw Maintenance

1. Clean It After Usage

When you use your chainsaw to cut wood, small chips and flecks of powder collect on the bar that supports the chain, and in the spaces separating the chain links. When this happens, the debris may come in contact with bar oil, which could transform the wood shavings into a sticky and stubborn mess that prevents you from moistening the chain. Not only will that impact the quality of your cuts, but it will also force the chainsaw to work harder than necessary to perform. Cleaning the chips and powder from your chainsaw after each use will prevent this problem and help you avoid frequent repairs.

2. Check Oil Levels

chainsawAn appropriate amount of lubricant is necessary for the saw to make smooth, even, and safe cuts. Many models are self-lubricating and designed to moisten on their own through an oil chamber. You can adjust how much oil lubricates the chain at any time, and you should always check the level before using your equipment. Add more oil if it’s low, but make sure you don’t add too much, as drips on the guide bar can attract dirt and debris.

3. Sharpen the Chain

Your chainsaw is only useful when the chain is sharp, so you should sharpen it with a file regularly. Before doing this, secure the tool and engage the brake, so it doesn’t move while you’re working. Then, sharpen the cutting teeth at a right angle in smooth, even maneuvers on both sides of the saw. You should additionally file the spaces between the teeth, known as depth gauges, at least once every three times you file.
