As a new mother, it’s common to have questions and concerns regarding nursing. With this in mind, physicians are happy to provide breastfeeding advice, so you feel prepared and comfortable. Here are a few tips to ensure both baby and mother have a positive experience.

4 Pieces of Breastfeeding Advice for New Moms

1. Observe Your Newborn’s Behaviors

Breastfeeding AdviceWhile your newborn will cry as a way to communicate their needs, they’ll also exhibit physical behaviors before this point to demonstrate hunger or their desire to nurse. Watch for when your baby sticks their tongue out, sucks on toys or their hand, continually lifts their head up and down or opens and closes their mouth repeatedly. Any of these movements could mean they’re ready for a feeding.

2. Create a Comfortable Space for Nursing

To establish a maternal bond and minimize stress or anxiety, create a comfortable space for nursing so you’re at ease and in turn, your baby will nurse calmly. This could include a quiet, peaceful room, a comfortable rocking chair, and a nursing pillow. Lying on your side or sitting in a reclined position will minimize strain on your body as you feed them.

3. Discover Your Baby’s Position of Choice

As you go about breastfeeding, you’ll notice your baby is partial to a particular position. Once you identify this position, have their mouth level to your chest, tilt their head back slightly. Moving their head each time can train your little one to move into this desired pose faster.

4. Cleanse & Moisturize Your Skin

While new mothers have a tendency to focus exclusively on their newborn, self-care is also important when breastfeeding, so the process doesn’t end up causing discomfort. After each feeding, pat yourself dry with a soft cloth. Avoid showering more than once or twice a day and use a gentle cleanser. Moisturize your skin and consider investing in a healing balm so that you don’t experience dryness or irritation that makes breastfeeding a challenge.
