There may come a time where your car or truck is no longer worth repairs. When this happens, junking a scrap car and recycling components is your best option, both financially and environmentally. Below are a few ways to prepare your vehicle before heading to the recycling center.

What to Do Before Recycling a Scrap Car

1. Gather Paperwork

Some scrap yards require the vehicle’s title before recycling can occur. Make sure you have the paperwork to show proof of ownership and if you don’t, get a copy from the local department of motor vehicles. Call the recycling center for any other documents they may need so you are prepared.

2. Remove Personal Items

3. Take Off the Plates

To ensure the vehicle is officially a scrap car, take off the license plates. The motor vehicle commission will ask for them when you head over to cancel the title. Some areas may even fine you for not returning them.

4. Cancel Vehicle Insurance

Let your insurance carrier know that the vehicle is now a scrap car and will be recycled. This will stop you from paying for a policy you no longer need. If you have paid ahead or for the year in full, ask for a refund. Calling ahead is also a courtesy that puts you in good standing with the carrier for future policies.

5. Remove Valuable Parts

There are some parts like alternators, radios, GPS systems, batteries, and tires that hold more value than others and may be sold for extra cash. If you choose to do this, however, make sure you and the recycling center are on the same page and they are aware that you will be taking these items before junking. Some locations will pay you for the total value of the car—including these components—so you don’t have to go to the effort of removing them.
