As the summer ends and the cold air starts to set in, proper maintenance can get your gas heating system in tip-top shape for the season ahead. By being proactive and completing a few tasks before the season officially kicks off, you'll be saving yourself time and energy later. Here are a few tips to follow to get your system ready for the upcoming season.

How to Prepare Your Gas Heating System for the Fall

1. Clean the Unit

Over time, dust, dirt, and debris build up in the gas heating system and cause it to run inefficiently; excessive accumulation can even pose a potential fire hazard. To protect the HVAC system, turn off the gas valve before dusting off any debris you see on the outside of the unit. Then, use a vacuum to clean up dust and wipe down the blades with a microfiber cloth.

2. Get a Filter Replacement

A dirty filter makes the system work harder and causes pollen, dust, and dirt to gather in the ducts and be recirculated throughout your home. By keeping your filter replaced regularly, you will extend the life of your gas heating system and keep yourself healthy during the fall.

3. Test for Functionality

Since the gas heating system has been off for a few months, check that it's still functioning properly. Turn the thermostat on, and see if heat is coming out of the vents. It’s normal to smell a slight burning odor as the heat burns off the soot that was trapped inside over the warmer months. However, if the smell doesn’t go away after a few hours, have a professional inspect the system.
