You might think that springtime is the only time to plant flowers. After all, it's the season of rebirth after the winter, when animals have been hibernating and plants dormant. However, certain flowers will give your garden color for months to come even if you plant them in the fall. Discover a few of these beautiful blooms below.

Ideal Flowers to Plant in the Fall

1. Chrysanthemum

Vibrant mums will give you a veritable riot of color in your garden. Possibilities include peach, yellow, red, orange, white, and pink. They also come in various sizes. The largest of them have a bloom diameter of up to two feet while "mini-mums" grow in two-inch pots.

2. Perennial Sunflower

Yellow sunflowers lend a cheerful atmosphere to any lawn. These do well in late summer and early fall. Note that they are smaller than the giant annuals, which grow much taller and have blooms as big as a dinner plate.

3. Pansies

If you have limited space in your garden, pansies are the solution. These small flowers are heavy blooming, so that they will give you considerable color within a small area. They are also perfect for hanging baskets and pots. If you're lucky, they may even bloom again come spring.

4. Marigolds

Pompom-like African marigolds areflower the largest variety of these florals. De-head them regularly to keep them regrowing and thriving well into the fall, up until the first frost. If you want something more subtle and delicate, opt for a French or signet marigold.

5. Ornamental Pepper

If you want to try something different, opt for an ornamental pepper to give your garden a unique touch. These slim peppers grow clustered upright and come in bright yellow or orange shades. However, beware that the peppers are usually too spicy for eating.
