The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a band of tissue that connects the lower jaw to the skull. Several factors can cause pain and stiffness in this joint, including teeth grinding and facial injury. While symptoms sometimes go away on their own, TMJ treatment is often needed to provide relief.

What TMJ Treatments Are Available to Me?

1. Oral Appliances

TMJ appliances include splints or mouthguards, which are often worn at night. Some appliances take the pressure off the TMJ, which reduces painful symptoms. Other types are used to correct bite alignment issues.

2. Medications

When symptoms are mild, patients may take over-the-counter pain relievers. Antidepressants are also beneficial in some cases. These medications are often used to address bruxism, or chronic teeth grinding, which is a significant contributor to TMJ pain.

3. Orthodontic Treatment

In this case, orthodontic treatments correct misalignments and occlusions, which then reduces painful TMJ effects. Along with traditional metal braces, dentists also use clear aligners to address crooked teeth.

4. Joint Aspiration

Also known as arthrocentesis, joint aspiration involves placing a needle into the joint to drain the fluid that has collected there. This reduces swelling, which usually contributes to TMJ issues, like stiffness.

5. Surgery

Along with minimally invasive procedures, like joint aspiration, other TMJ surgeries are also available. Mandible surgery can prevent lockjaw from occurring, while discectomies entail removing a disc in the TMJ that provides cushioning to the joint. These procedures are often used when other treatments fail to provide relief.
