Whether you've been hit head-on, sideswiped, or were involved in a rear-end collision, auto accidents can result in serious injuries. However, there are several ways to minimize this risk. Below are some helpful tips to that effect.

3 Tips to Reduce the Risk of Injury in a Car Accident

1. Adjust Headrest Properly

Most modern vehicles feature adjustable headrests in both the front and back seats. These can raise up and down to fit the occupant. Properly adjusting the headrest can prevent whiplash in the event of a rear-end collision. The bulk of the headrest should be directly behind the occupant's head, and the top of the headrest should be about even with the top of their head.

2. Wear Seat Belts

Rear-end collisionSeat belts are an essential safety device. Failure to wear one—or wearing one improperly—can dramatically increase your chance of injury. The US Centers for Disease Control have found that wearing one decreases the likelihood of serious injury by 50% and death by 45% in the event of an automobile accident. Even if you find them uncomfortable, a bit of mild discomfort is worth it if it saves your life.

3. Keep Your Child in a Car Seat

Car seats reduce injuries for children in the event of head-on and rear-end collisions, and they’re legally required. In California, children under age 8 must remain in the back seat in a car seat unless they are over 4 feet, 9 inches tall. Babies and toddlers must ride in a rear-facing seat until they reach 40 pounds or 40 inches in height.
