As a homeowner, you may not be aware that there is more than one style of garage door available. Over the years, manufacturers have broadened their selections to help homeowners meet their needs or to cater to individual tastes. By exploring the types of doors on the market, you may discover a different style that fits your needs more ideally.

4 Common Types of Residential Garage Doors

1. Sectional Panels

You may already be familiar with this type of garage door, since they are frequently used on residential garages. These doors consist of individual panels that are attached to one another via hinges. As the door is raised, those panels bend at the hinges to allow the door to curve along the track. As the door lowers, the panels straighten to form the full door.

Garage Door2. Roll Up Doors

In the past, roll-up doors were primarily used on commercial garages, but some homeowners have started installing them on their own garages. The door consists of small slats, which are only about 2 to 3 inches wide. As the door is raised, these slats roll up around one another via a motorized roller. This type of garage door saves space, and the materials used are more resistant to rust, freezing, and decay.

3. Slide to the Side

This type of garage door still uses traditional panels, but the panels slide to the side of the garage. The track runs along the top and bottom portions of the garage opening and extends along the inside wall. When opened, the sectional panels slide along the track parallel to the wall. This system can be more beneficial as you won’t need to mount a motor to the ceiling and the door’s operation won’t rely on balancing springs.

4. Side Hinges

These custom garage doors open just like any other door in your home. A door is attached to each side of the opening via hinges, resembling barn doors, and can be swung open and closed with little effort. They’re made from wood, or you can order doors made from galvanized steel. If your garage has a low ceiling or other obstructions that would make an overhead door problematic, this type of door offers a more desirable alternative.
