If you’re hard of hearing, you may feel detached from the world. In a society that focuses so much on how things sound, you’ll surely get upset with not being able to understand what’s happening around you. Even worse, you’ll feel like you're the only one with a hearing problem, especially if you are under 65.

You don’t have to feel this way! The audiologists at Audiology Unlimited want you to remember that hearing loss is a condition that happens to many people. While it’s not ideal, it’s no reason to feel separated from society.

Take a look at these statistics:

  • 1 in 14 people between ages 29 to 40 have hearing loss
  • At least 1.4 million children ages 18 or younger have hearing problems
  • It’s estimated that 3 in 1,000 infants are born with serious hearing issues

Even with these numbers in mind, it’s easy to think that hearing loss only affects the elderly. This is not true; 65 percent of people with hearing loss are younger than age 65, and six million of them are between the ages of 18 and 44. This is not only due to genetics, but also caused by hearing abuse from overexposure to loud music and noises.

Still, you may feel like your hearing loss sets you apart from your peers. You might fear that a hearing aid will only worsen your situation. Don’t worry about feeling separated from your friends by wearing a hearing aid. Your hearing is more important than impressing your friends, and without a hearing aid, you’ll end up pushing them farther away.

If you have hearing loss, don’t feel alone. Get to College Park Hearing Services and ask about their hearing aid options. And if you fear that you’re losing your hearing, get a hearing test as soon as possible. Your ears deserve to hear what the world has to offer!
