Hula is the famous traditional dance of the Hawaiian islands, and it’s known throughout the world for its grace and elegance. Each movement and step is creating a story or has a meaning. If you’re going to a luau as part of your Hawaiian vacation, here are a few basic steps you will notice if a hula is performed.

3 Basic Hula Steps

1. Kāholo

hulaKaholo being a motion used more frequent in this modern day, it is essential to many of our dances today. Taking two steps to your right moving your right foot first with your left following, then repeating to your left foot and your right following parallel.

2. Hela

Two feet are shoulder width apart and your legs are bent at the knee. Starting with one leg you extend your foot, pointing it at a 45-degree angle touching the floor in front of your body, then bring it back, and repeating with the other side. Ladies typically roll their hips left to right with each step, as men remain stiff. This motion can be used in place or moving vertical or sideways.

3. ‘Ami

With two feet spread apart at shoulder width, feet flat, and both legs bent at the knee. Begin to create a full circle using your hips hitting each corner almost like a box, but creating a full smooth circle continuing into the next. When practicing the rotations, keep your knees slightly bent and both feet flat on the floor and try not to move your upper body.
