A new driveway can greatly add to your home’s aesthetic appeal and functionality. Though highly durable, asphalt is prone to damage and deterioration if not cared for properly. Luckily, with simple asphalt maintenance, you can prevent problems following a new installation. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to help you care for your new paved area.

Do:

Give the new driveway time to cure.

asphalt maintenanceAs tempting as it may be to use your new driveway right away, you should wait at least 24 hours before placing any objects over it. This will prevent any marks from forming on the surface. During the first few weeks following the installation, keep sharp objects like gardening tools away from the area. Even high-heeled shoes could create small dents when the material is softer.

Sealcoat it.

Sealcoating is one of the best asphalt maintenance techniques for extending the life of any paved area. A sealant provides additional protection against water, ultraviolet rays, and oil, all of which could eat away at the asphalt over time. Most driveways should be sealcoated every five years.

Don’t:

Drive along the edge.

The strength of your driveway lies not in its asphalt, but rather the base layer beneath it. This part is typically placed at the center of the space, extending outward. Driving along the weaker edge of your driveway increases the risk of cracking, since outer areas may not sit above the foundation. Stay close to the middle whenever possible.

Park overweight vehicles on it.

Residential driveways are designed for automobiles. Parking higher-load trucks on the surface may cause damage and denting. You can prevent weight from affecting the asphalt by parking your car in the garage instead of the driveway. Parking in different areas every time will also evenly distribute the weight of heavier loads.
