The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, or VA, provides free headstones, markers, and medallions for deceased, honorably discharged veterans. If your loved one gave military service, consult the guide below to learn more about veteran’s memorial benefits.

What Are the Types of Memorial Options?

Veterans may be eligible for the following types of markers.

  • Headstone: These are upright marble or granite stones measuring 42 x 13 inches and 4 inches thick, inscribed with the name, dates of the birth and death, rank, details of service, and a short epitaph.
  • Marker: Bronze markers are 24 x 12 x ¾ of an inch. Granite, or flat marble markers, are 24 x 12 x 4 inches. Bronze niche markers are 8 ½  x 5 ½ inches wide, with a 7/16 inch rise. They are inscribed similarly to headstones.
  • Medallions: Bronze medallions are available for those who have already purchased a private headstone but want to designate military service. Large, medium, and small sizes with the word “Veteran” and the branch of service are inscribed.
