The refrigerant inside your HVAC system is responsible for pulling heat out of your home’s indoor air supply while sparking the condensation reaction that removes humidity. Unfortunately, when refrigerant leaks, it can result in significant AC problems. Here is an overview of what causes these leaks, as well as when to call an HVAC contractor

What Causes Refrigerant Leaks?

1. Vibration

When your air conditioning system gets old, some components can vibrate more than they are supposed to, causing leaks in the refrigerant lines. For instance, ball bearings that streamline the fan movement wear down, leading to vibrations that strain the compressor and corresponding refrigerant lines. As a result, leaks can form and make the unit less efficient.

2. Air Pollution

hvac contractorFormaldehyde is a common indoor air pollutant, and it can corrode the metal lines that hold refrigerant, leading to pinhole leaks. Since refrigerant has propellants that cause it to evaporate almost instantly, you may not even realize you have a leak until your system stops performing properly. Though, a 10% reduction in refrigerant can lead to a 20% boost in electrical usage, since your system won’t be operating as efficiently.

Pay attention to how quickly it takes your air conditioner to cool down your home. If the air coming out of your vents isn’t cold, and it takes your home a long time to cool, you should have your system tested for leaks. Additionally, look for sudden spikes in your energy bills.

3. Copper Cooling Coils

Formic acid can form within copper cooling coils, which can dissolve the lines that hold refrigerant. As a result, HVAC contractors recommend using units with aluminum coils, which aren’t prone to formic acid development. If you have an older AC system that has copper coils, look for signs of wear and tear, such as corrosion and rust.
