A clog in your shower's plumbing can be frustrating, with water that is either slow to drain or won't drain at all. The first step to preventing plumbing clogs is to understand the cause. Here are some common causes and a few prevention tips to help you with this issue.

Causes

Hair is one of the leading sources of shower clogs. Every time you take a shower, some amount of hair will likely fall from your head and body. Over time, this can build up in drains and prevent the free flow of water. Skin cells can also accumulate over time as they’re scrubbed away in the shower, contributing to the clog.

Soap residue is another concern. As soap flows down the drain, it can cling to the sides of the pipes. With each wash, the soap scum grows, making it harder for water to drain out. Hard water can also be an issue. It’s unusually high in calcium and magnesium, which, like hair, skin, and soap, can build up on the insides of pipes and drains. These deposits are difficult to remove, and they might not be noticeable until the water stops draining as it should.

Prevention & Solutions

plumbingFortunately, most of these clogs can be prevented. Use a hair catcher in the shower. This mesh catchall fits over the drain opening and gathers much of the hair and other debris that come off when showering. Be sure to clean it regularly, disposing of all debris in the trash. Investing in a water softener is another prevention tool, as it stops mineral accumulation on pipes. It will help plumbing, fixtures, and appliances last longer, too.

If your drain is clogged already, try using a toilet plunger; fill the tub with a few inches of water first, then give the plunger several good thrusts. If that doesn't work, a bucket of hot water with one cup of bleach can help remove buildup inside drains.
