An AED is an automated external defibrillator used to treat emergencies in which a person goes into sudden cardiac arrest. The device works by quickly obtaining the rhythm of the heart and sending a corresponding electrical signal to restore a normal heartbeat. An AED—and someone who has received AED training—should be present in every church; below are a few reasons why.

Benefits of Having an AED at Your Church

1. Saves Lives

Every year, a staggering 300,000 to 400,000 people experience sudden cardiac arrest away from a hospital setting. It stands to reason that at least some of these cases occur in churches. The National Safety Council has found that greater access to AEDs and AED training can save up to 40,000 lives every year. Having an AED device in your church allows you to look out for the health, well-being, and long lives of your parishioners.

2. Limited Time

On average, it takes four to 10 AED trainingminutes for paramedics to arrive on the scene after someone places a 911 call. This timeframe is life or death for someone in cardiac arrest. For each minute defibrillation is delayed, chances of survival go down by 10%. Studies have shown that a person in cardiac arrest has a 67% chance of survival when a bystander uses a defibrillator on them. Compare this to the 43% chance of survival that comes with waiting for paramedics.

3. Brings Peace

Knowing you have an AED on hand will bring significant peace of mind to congregants and staff members alike. It demonstrates care for the congregation and lets them know that they are in safe hands in the event of a cardiac emergency. While sudden cardiac arrest can occur in people of any age, even in those who are seemingly healthy, the average victim is at least 60 years old. If your congregation has a large elderly population, an AED will make them feel like the cherished folks that they are.
