A toilet leak can be a mess to clean up and result in wasted water and exorbitant utility bills. Plus, every home needs their toilets to be usable, safe, and sanitary at all times. Because of these reasons, always call a plumber at the first sign of a toilet leak. To help you determine the source of the issue, below are a few common causes of leaking toilets.

Why Your Toilet Is Leaking

1. A Faulty Supply Line

The supply line is the flexible metal or plastic tubing that connects your toilet to the stop valve of the water supply. Over time, the joints in the supply line can weaken or loosen, which will result in leaking. There is also a lining of rubber inside the line that can wear away or puncture over time and cause leaks. The supply line usually runs from the underside of the tank into the wall; if the leak is coming from this area, it's likely a supply line issue.

2. A Broken Flapper

plumberA flapper is another term for the flush valve seal, which plugs the drain inside the tank and holds water in. If a flapper breaks or wears out, it can no longer contain water inside the tank and will produce leaks. However, sometimes a leak will result from a stuck flapper, which usually occurs when the toilet handle gets stuck in the downward position. When this happens, the tank will continue to fill and eventually overflow.

3. A Cracked Tank

Toilet tanks are strong and durable, and they are designed to withstand a lot. They aren't invincible, however, and a particularly forceful impact could cause a tank to crack. Even tiny, virtually unnoticeable hairline cracks can cause leaks. The fill valve of the toilet cannot sense the presence of a crack, so it will keep on filling the tank as normal, even though water may be escaping through the fracture. An experienced plumber will be able to identify the crack and propose a solution.
