As baby teeth erupt through your little one’s gums, they may cause significant discomfort. While parents often feel helpless when their babies experience teething pain, you can take steps to alleviate soreness during this important growth stage.

5 Tips for Caring for a Teething Baby

1. Rub Their Gums

Using a clean finger, gently push down on the gums where baby teeth are erupting. This gentle pressure can help alleviate pain, and it’s a simple, safe way to soothe your child when you don’t have any other supplies on hand.

2. Use a Cool Soothing Object

A cool washcloth or teething ring can provide the comfort your child needs. Avoid giving them a frozen teething ring, though, as the temperature may be too extreme for sensitive gum tissue.

3. Wipe Away Drool

4. Try a Solid Food

For children who have already begun eating solid food, chewing on something hard will help minimize the discomfort of emerging baby teeth. Opt for small bites of chilled carrots or peeled cucumbers, and supervise while they’re eating to ensure they chew and swallow properly.

5. Consider a Pain Reliever

If your baby seems to be in significant pain, you can administer an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Follow your pediatrician’s recommendations, and reserve this option for children who are six months of age or older.

As soon as the first baby teeth emerge, bring your little one to Pedodontic Associates.
