Kidneys are two organs located in the lower back on either side of the spine. They play a crucial role in helping your body function optimally, but as with many aspects of the body, it’s also possible for them to encounter several issues. If you’ve recently been diagnosed with kidney stones or another condition, learning about these organs may help you feel more informed as you explore treatment options.

What Do the Kidneys Do?

At the most basic level, the kidneys filter the blood. Yet, their overall responsibilities span far and wide. They remove waste products, including drugs and alcohol, from the body, balance fluid levels, and produce active vitamin D to support bone health. They also play a role in regulating blood pressure and red blood cell production.

Within these nephrons, waste is filtered out, and the filtered fluid is delivered throughout the body through the bloodstream to support life. Waste products are excreted through urine. Ultimately, the kidneys filter and return 200 quarts of fluid every day, only about two of which exit the body through urine.

What Are Some Common Kidney Issues?

Kidney stones are a common yet potentially painful condition in which deposits made from minerals and salts form in the kidneys. They can affect any area of the urinary tract, including the bladder, and may block urine. While passing a kidney stone can be painful, the stones typically won’t cause lasting damage. For particularly large stones or those lodged in the urinary tract, surgical intervention may be needed.

Other kidney abnormalities, collectively classified as chronic kidney disease, may also occur. In some cases, individuals may be born with issues that affect kidney function, while conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes can also cause kidney disease. Drugs and toxins may also lead to kidney issues. Many kidney conditions can be treated effectively, especially if an underlying issue contributing to the disease, such as diabetes, is diagnosed and controlled.
