If your home is one of the many that rely on a septic system, you might notice a strong odor in your home from time to time. It’s a relatively common problem, and there are a few possible explanations. Learning what the culprit may be will help you and your technician bring fresh air back to your home.

4 Reasons Sewage Odors Enter Homes

1. Full Septic Tank

It’s common for a septic system to give off a strong odor as the result of reaching its maximum capacity. A full tank will also cause your toilet, dishwasher, and washing machine to run slower. You should expect your tank to become full once every couple of years, depending on its size and your household water usage. By scheduling septic maintenance with your service company for the same time every cycle, you can address this issue before it becomes a problem.

2. Dry Drain Traps

septic systemA drain trap is a U-shaped curve in the pipes leading from your sinks. This serves to keep gasses and odors from rising up out of the drain. However, the traps can become dry over time. This is especially true of sinks that don’t get much use, such as those in guest bathrooms. To avoid this problem, run the water in every sink on a regular basis and have a plumber clean the drains routinely.

3. Clogged Vent Stack

Another important component of septic systems is the vent stack, which is the means by which trapped gases are released. This line leads out through a vent in the roof so that gases can be pushed out in a way that won’t affect you in the home. However, if leaves and other debris clog that vent, odors will likely seep out into the home. Check the condition of your vents from time to time to be sure they’re clear of sticks, leaves, and other types of debris.

4. Winter Weather

Your vent stack may also get clogged in the winter, especially after heavy snowfall. As the snow falls around the vent, the heat coming from the vent will melt the snow. As the snow melts and refreezes, it will cause ice to form over the vent. Though not particularly common in the South, it can be just as troubling as leaves and debris in the warmer weather, since the ice will also block the vents. Keep an eye on your vent if a significant amount of snow is in the forecast.
