When you're buying new carpeting for your home, you have more to choose than just the color. Different carpets have different textures based on the shape and length of the fibers—otherwise known as pile. Each pile design creates a unique feel and look, so be sure to review your options before making a decision.

Your Guide to Carpet Textures

1. Berber

When carpet is woven, every strand of pile forms a loop that connects to the backing at both ends. Some styles cut this loop, but Berber leaves them intact. This texture makes carpet cleaning easy since spills won't soak into the material thoroughly. As a result, this is an excellent carpet style for rooms that are prone to spills, such as dining rooms and living rooms.

2. Plush

3. Frieze

A Frieze carpet also uses cut pile, but here the strands are coarse, loose, and twisted to point in different directions, creating a shaggy look. This texture adds to a casual, fun atmosphere in children's rooms, game rooms, and basements.

4. Pattern

This style mixes both cut and intact loop fibers, and the visible difference in texture creates patterns without adding more colors to the carpet. Designs can be geometric, striped, spotted, or more complex.

5. Indoor/Outdoor

This carpet uses loops similar to the Berber style, but they're packed tightly to create a stiff, non-absorbent surface. This carpet isn't as comfortable to walk on, but it is durable and resistant to grime, making it perfect for entryways and outdoor areas.
