Are you looking to have a well drilled? Hiring an experienced well drilling contractor will help assure the best well location and construction. Below are the types of wells available in Florida as well as the most frequently asked questions about water wells.

Types of Wells

Drilled Wells

Most wells that supply water to Florida homes are drilled. To create the well, a well drilling contractor uses a rotary or percussion drilling machine to penetrate through hundreds of feet of bedrock and intersects fractures containing groundwater. Drilled wells are installed with continuous casings to avoid collapse and sediment infiltration. They’re generally at less risk of contamination than other wells.

Dug Wells

Dug (or bored) wells are created by digging with a backhoe or shovel to a lower level than the water table, usually up to 30 feet deep. They’re lined with brick or other materials to keep them from collapsing. Dug wells are more susceptible to contamination than drilled wells because they only obtain water from shallow aquifers.

Driven Wells

Driven wells are created by pounding a pointed head into the ground with a sledgehammer. A section of well pipe is then attached to the back of the pointed head, and it's driven in with a pipe driver. Then another section of pipe is added and driven in, and so on until the head reaches adequate depth. Driven wells are shallow wells generally used in soft, sandy soil in areas with high water tables. They’re often used for irrigation purposes.

FAQ About Water Wells

Is a permit needed to get a well drilled?

In Florida, every well needs a permit. Your well drilling contractor can typically handle the process of acquiring the permit for you.

How long does it take to drill a well?

Well drilling can be completed in as little as a day or can take several days. Factors include the well location, size, and the weather.Well drilling contractor

Is a deeper well a better well?

Wells that are too shallow are more likely to get contaminated. However, the water quality and taste don't get better the deeper the well. Once drilling reaches water, your well drilling contractor can determine the best placement for your well.

Do drilled wells run dry?

If you have a shallow well, it can run dry because it relies on rainwater to refill the water table. However, a drilled well typically runs several hundred feet deep into an established aquifer. Therefore, it would not run dry.
