For teens, getting one’s braces removed is an exciting rite of passage. Before you reveal your perfect new smile, though, you might wonder what the process entails. While the appointment itself doesn’t require any special preparation, the following guide may put your mind at ease and give you an idea of what to expect for life after orthodontics.

What Happens During Your Appointment?

To take the brackets off your teeth, an orthodontist will use a special instrument to gently remove them. There will still be some bonding cement in place, which they will need to scrape off with another dental tool. This process should take roughly an hour. After the braces are removed, your teeth may feel a bit sensitive due to the newly exposed enamel.

The orthodontist will give you a retainer and instructions for how to use it. This device, usually worn during sleep, will prevent teeth from shifting and preserve the smile you’ve worked so hard for.

During the first few days, you may want to minimize contact with foods that are especially hot or cold. However, within a week, you can resume your normal eating habits, and even enjoy foods that were off-limits before, such as popcorn.

Make sure to brush your teeth twice a day during this time—gently, if your teeth are still tender. Then schedule a thorough tooth cleaning to address any tartar that may have built up in hard-to-reach places.
