Running is an excellent exercise, but for some people, it can lead to pain and discomfort. Although it can cause several different injuries, as well as general hip or back pain, one of the most common cardio-related ailments is runner’s knee.

What is Runner’s Knee?

The term runner’s knee is used to describe a range of conditions that cause pain around the kneecap, including strained tendons, worn or torn cartilage and irritated soft tissue. Although these injuries are common among runners, anyone who engages in activities that involve repetitive stress on the knee, including cycling, skiing, and walking, can develop runner’s knee. In some cases, what’s believed to be runner’s knee is referred pain, meaning it’s a symptom of something else, such as back pain or an issue with the hips.

What Are the Symptoms of Runner’s Knee?

back pain Florence, KYThe most apparent symptom of runner’s knee is a pain in the knee, primarily around and behind the kneecap when you are active. You might also feel pain in your knees when you sit for a long time, or your knee cap may feel sore or tender to the touch. Runner’s knee can also cause a clicking or grinding sound when you straighten and bend your leg, and you may experience weakness in your leg while walking and standing. You might also encounter back pain or pain and discomfort in other parts of the body as a result of compensating for the knee pain during your workouts.

How is Runner’s Knee Treated?

Runner’s knee is diagnosed by taking an inventory of your symptoms and through diagnostic imaging tests such as X-rays to determine the source of the pain. Many people find relief by resting for several days. Applying ice and compression to the knee, and keeping it elevated, can often relieve the pain. However, depending on the underlying cause, more aggressive treatment may be necessary. For instance, if you also have back pain, you could have an alignment problem and need to see a chiropractor for an adjustment. In severe cases, surgery to correct the problem may be required as well.
