Gum disease can occur when plaque, a bacteria-filled film, builds up in the mouth against and under the gum line. However, with regular trips to the dentist and cleanings, it can be prevented. If plaque goes untreated, it can lead to gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums, and then periodontitis, an advanced form of gum disease that can lead to tooth loss. Symptoms of gum disease include swelling of the gums, bleeding, and tenderness. If you are experiencing these symptoms, the good news is that this disease is reversible. Here’s what you need to know.

A Guide to Preventing Gum Disease

1. Floss

The point of flossing is to loosen up the bacteria and leftover food that can get lodged between your teeth. Flossing before you brush will loosen the plaque, making your brushing that much more effective. You should floss at least once a day to stop bacteria from building up between your teeth and at the sensitive gum line.

2. Get Regular Cleanings

dentistScheduling an appointment with the dentist for a teeth cleaning may not be on your mind. However, staying on top of your annual dental cleanings will give your dentist the chance to catch any small problems, like minor cavities, before they become bigger ones. Plus, getting your teeth cleaned professionally reduces your risk of gum disease, as they’ll scrape off the deep-set plaque your toothbrush can’t reach.

3. Use Fluoride Toothpaste

There are plenty of different kinds of toothpaste out there, from charcoal to baking soda. However, when you’re shopping, always look for the American Dental Association’s® seal of approval. Fluoride toothpaste has been recommended for years because of its ability to fight gingivitis, freshen the breath, and whiten the teeth.

4. Utilize Mouthwash

In addition to toothpaste, you should look for a mouthwash that is labeled antiseptic or contains fluoride. A good mouthwash used directly after brushing gives your teeth a coat of protection against bacteria growth. Plus, you’ll have some extra confidence during the day knowing your breath smells good.
