1. Transmission

Reddish, pink, or thick brown fluid is generally the result of a transmission leak. It will be slick and found towards the center of the car, near either the axle seals or output shaft seal. This can be caused by damage to the transmission pan gasket, fluid lines, or seals. A transmission leak should be fixed right away to prevent transmission gears from grinding together. 

2. Oil

Engine oil is brown or black in color and feels somewhat sticky to the touch. Oil leaks occur under a vehicle, directly below the engine, but it’s not always easy to spot exactly what the source is. It can come from various locations, such as the oil filter, timing cover, oil plug, or head gasket. If you can’t find the leak, it’s best to take it into an auto repair shop to avoid engine damage. 

3. Powering Steering

Also red or brown, power steering fluid can resemble transmission fluid. Thus, it’s important to pay close attention to where the leak is. Typically, a power steering leak will be closer to the front of the car, and directly under the power steering pump, in the steering gear or rack, or under the hoses and tubing designed to transport the fluid. This can affect your steering function, creating a safety hazard.

4. Coolant

With its characteristic neon yellow, green, or pink coloring, coolant is the easiest leak to identify. It also smells sweet and has a slimy feel. Leaking takes place in the middle of the vehicle and can be due to a hole in the radiator, hoses, water pump, or coolant reservoir. 

5. Brake

Clear or brown, slick fluid found near the wheels is likely a brake fluid leak, and your vehicle should be towed to an auto repair shop immediately. This means you’re at risk of experiencing brake failure. There may be a leak in the wheel cylinders, brake lines, or calipers.
