The efficiency of your home largely depends on the quality of insulation installed. Insulation is designed to absorb thermal energy (heat) or reflect radiant heat. Some areas are more vulnerable to air leaks than others, however, so follow the guide below to learn where you should place insulation in your space.

Where Should You Install Insulation in Your Home?

1. Attic

Heat transfer from the roof can leave the attic extremely hot during the summer. That heat will attempt to find ways to get into your house because heat seeks cold.  When winter arrives, the heat you are putting in your house will try to escape into the attic which can leave your house cold and drafty. To maintain interior comfort, heating and cooling equipment must work harder as a result. Installing attic insulation will prevent heat transfer and air loss, which can amount to up to $600 savings in annual heating and cooling costs.

2. Floors

insulationOutside air can infiltrate your home from the ground up, so have a contractor add insulation under the flooring throughout the house. This includes the attached garage, crawl spaces, and the basement perimeter. Proper air sealing and insulation is key to preventing air infiltration into the home during the winter.

3. Exterior Walls

Outside air can seep through joints, stud holes, and other openings in the exterior walls, so remember to insulate these areas, too. Contractors can install fiberglass insulation to seal all of the nooks and crannies. If surfaces seem hot to the touch during the summer, even when the air conditioner is running, you might need a reflective wall insulation installed on cape cod style walls or transition walls.
