Getting a flat tire never happens at a convenient time; it makes you late for work or delays your errands. Once you attach the spare tire on the vehicle, you can go about your day; however, you will need to visit an auto repair shop soon. Spare tires aren’t meant to be a replacement; these are only temporary fixes.

What Happens When You Drive With Your Spare Tire?

Depending on where you got your flat tire, safely getting to an auto repair shop is not always possible. Most spare tires are designed to travel a maximum of 50 miles per hour. This will get you close enough to a repair shop so that you don’t end up stranded. If you find that you are more than fifty miles away from an auto repair shop, consider having your vehicle towed.

How Do I Make My Spare Tire Last Longer?

Woman changing flat tireWhile driving slower helps the spare tire last longer, keep in mind that most are not designed to the same size and specification as your primary wheels. If your vehicle has a spare tire that is equal to the size and design specifications, you can continue driving as though you never got a flat in the first place. Remember to replace the damaged tire as you no longer have a spare.

Many other cases, you will have to work with a more compact and temporary spare, commonly known as a donut tire. This spare will often be dissimilar with the other three. In this scenario, you should get your car to an auto repair shop and avoid highway driving when possible; you shouldn’t go more than 50 miles per hour, or you risk another blowout and possible damage to the drive train. In almost all cases, the TPMS light will come on as the spare usually does not have the requisite sensor.

Remember to check the pressure in your spare tire regularly. What a disappointment to find a flat spare tire when you really need it!
