For many homeowners, the mere sight of a spider is all that’s needed to call pest control. However, most spiders don't pose a threat to humans, even if they look creepy. Understanding the various types of spiders that might roam around your property will help you decide if you need to bring in an expert or just grab a tissue.

Types of Spiders Commonly Found in Georgia

1. Wolf Spiders

Because of their large size, wolf spiders appear more dangerous than they are and often trigger people to call pest control. These hairy spiders can grow up to two full inches and may be seen day or night. While they do build webs, they can also hunt effectively without them due to their size and speed. However, wolf spider bites are very uncommon, and they don't pose a significant threat to humans.

2. Common House Spider

If you spot a small, yellow and brown spider with dark rings around its legs, you likely have a common house spider in your home. Even though they are entirely harmless, and may help keep the bug population in your home down, be prepared to find annoying webs scattered throughout your property.

3. Black Widow

Although spider bites are infrequent, the bite of a black widow could be dangerous to a human. This spider is one of the easiest to identify because of its unique appearance: a glossy black body with a distinct red hourglass shape on the back.

4. Yellow Garden Spider

Like the black widow, the yellow garden spider is mostly black except for a few yellow markings along its torso and legs. Typically, these spiders stick to gardens where they build large webs meant for trapping bugs. While the yellow garden spider does produce venom, it’s not harmful to people.

5. Brown Recluse

The brown recluse is another spider that deserves immediate pest control when discovered in or around the home. These spiders are harder to spot, as they’re brown like most harmless spiders. However, a brown recluse will have a dark brown pattern on the back of its head that resembles a violin. The venom of this spider could be harmful to humans, so it’s best to call pest control if you think you find one.
