Learning how to put spin on a bowling ball is an important step toward improving your skills in this sport. It’s the key to superior control and requires a practiced technique to achieve. Fortunately, there are proven steps you can follow. Here’s what you need to know.

How to Put Spin on a Bowling Ball

1. Find the Right Grip

How you grip the ball will determine how much it hooks when released. A relaxed grip with your hand flexed over your wrist will provide a straight roll. Cradling the ball between your palm and wrist— with a strong grip—will provide the widest hook arch. A firm grip with a straight wrist will give a slight spin with a flexible hook. When choosing a ball, make sure you don’t feel a lot of pressure on your hand when holding it.

2. Get the Angle Right

bowlingTypically, you’ll want to take a four-step approach. Take one step forward, bringing the ball over your foot. On the second step, bring the ball backward, past your knee. The ball should be at its highest point behind you on the third step. On the fourth step, bring the ball forward and release. Keep your wrist and forearm straight during the backswing.

3. Release the Thumb & Rotate

For a proper spin, make sure your thumb is the first finger out of the ball. Simultaneously rotate your wrist 15-degrees counterclockwise and follow through. The ball should spin based on this release and the grip style. You’ll have to practice regularly at a bowling center to refine your technique.
