A swimming pool is an asset to any home, providing you and your loved ones with months of summer fun. Winterizing your pool can lengthen its lifespan and decrease pool renovation costs. Take these steps in the fall to prepare your pool for freezing temperatures.

5-Step Guide to Preparing Your Pool for Winter

1. Do a Deep Clean

After the family has taken their last dip, give the pool a thorough cleaning. Remove leaves from the water and clean out the pump basket. Backwash the filter to rid it of contaminants. Remove debris from the bottom that may otherwise stain and require a pool renovations paint job.

2. Combat Algae

On the last day that your pool system is running, add an algaecide to the water. Run the pump for 24 hours so that the substance can circulate throughout the pool. This will stave off algae growth and make spring-cleaning easier. You can also add a phosphate remover—algae feed on phosphate.

3. Drain to Prevent Freezing

Drain your pool water so it's four to six inches below the pool skimmer to prevent freezing. You should also drain water from the pump, heater, and filter to protect motorized parts. If they’re damp and the water freezes and expands, these devices could be damaged.pool renovation

4. Secure Your Pool Cover

Invest in a top-quality pool cover. This protects from the elements and keeps dirt and debris out, decreasing the likelihood of needing pool renovations. It also increases safety around the pool; you don't want kids or animals falling into freezing water in winter.

5. Check In Regularly

Check the pool's water chemistry every two weeks during the winter months. Add one last dose of chlorine and algaecide before closing up the pool for the season. Continue to run the pump for at least four hours every day when it's cold out to keep bacteria and algae from breeding.
